DHCP – Understanding Networking and Security Configurations

DHCP can be turned on for each segment during the provisioning process. On a new tier-1 gateway, DHCP can’t be configured until the DHCP profile is set on it. To enable DHCP on a newly created Tier-1 gateway, edit the Tier-1 gateway configurations under Networking and Tier-1 Gateways. Then click on the three dots on the left-hand side of the tier-1 gateway, click on Edit, and then click on Set DHCP Configuration, as seen in the following screenshot:

Next, select the default DHCP server profile, and click on SAVE. This profile is preconfigured on a hidden segment of 10.96.0.1/30 and cannot be edited. However, a new profile with a different configuration can be added, as seen in the following screenshot:

After the profile has been activated on the Tier-1 gateway, DHCP needs to be configured per segment. DHCP functionality is disabled by default in new network segments. Customers can use static IPs for workloads if they want to, and they can also combine static IPs and DHCP, but in this case, static IPs should remain outside the DHCP IP range.

To configure and enable DHCP on the segment, navigate back to the Segments section under Networking, click on the three dots near the segment, and click on Edit, as seen in the following screenshot:

Afterward, select SET DHCP CONFIG, and a new window will appear by default with the Gateway DHCP Server option and the default DHCP profile selected. The DHCP Config option needs to be toggled on, and the DHCP Ranges value needs to be configured as part of the selected subnet. In the example shown, a network segment 10.22.12.0/23 with a default gateway of 10.22.12.1/23 and a DHCP range of 10.22.12.100-10.22.12.200 is configured. Additionally, Lease Time and DNS Servers have to be configured; as seen in Figure 6.30. The next section explores the DNS configurations.

Other configuration options for DHCP settings are Local DHCP Server for configuring a dedicated DHCP server in the segment that is not shared and DHCP Relay for using an external DHCP server.
