A route-based VPN has several advantages:

  • Networks can be automatically advertised and learned between the VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC and the on-premises or remote VPN endpoint. This reduces errors and simplifies operations. No manual configuration is required when networks are added and removed from the environment.
  • A route-based VPN provides redundancy. Multiple VPN tunnels can be established in an active/standby or active/active configuration using the ECMP protocol. eBGP metric advertisements are used to determine the on-premises or remote VPN endpoint BGP neighbor behavior in an active/active configuration.
  • You can configure a route-based VPN connection as a backup for your DX connectivity. You activate this option in the Direct Connect menu. See the following screenshot for more details:
